Ice Fishing Huts of Ontario: A Winter Tradition in Focus
Ontario’s frozen lakes become quiet, almost otherworldly landscapes in the winter, punctuated by the presence of ice fishing huts. These modest structures, in muted tones that blend with the snow and sky, stand resilient against the elements. Each hut tells a quiet story—of solitude, patience, and the enduring connection between people and nature. Through my photography, I aim to capture the understated beauty of these shelters and the sense of stillness they bring to the vast, frozen expanse.

During my journey documenting Ontario’s ice fishing culture, I had the privilege of meeting Kim Taekwon, a Korean fisherman who had set up his hut on the ice on Lake Simcoe. He didn’t speak English, but after a few gestures with my camera, he gave a small nod and allowed me to take his portrait. Standing against the frozen landscape, he carried a quiet presence, focused on the task at hand. There was no need for words—just a brief exchange, a shared moment, and a portrait that speaks for itself.
